Translation Memory

Organize reusable bilingual segments by target language, control which memories participate, and inspect or exchange their entries.

What Translation Memory is for

Translation Memory (TM) stores source-and-target segment pairs for reuse in the project. It helps translators compare prior approved wording and supports translation context, but a match remains reference material until the current translation is reviewed and applied.

Read the resource list

All shows each attached memory with its source language, target languages, entry count, and timestamps. A target-language tab narrows the list to that language and exposes its processing order, Active switch, and Language Default selection.

  • Active determines whether the memory participates for the selected target language.
  • Language Default identifies the default writable choice for that language where the resource permits it.
  • Drag resources within a language tab to set their priority; the All tab is for overview and language attachment rather than priority ordering.
All
Shows each TM once with its source language, attached target languages, entry count, and last update.
Active
Includes the TM when searching matches for the selected target language. Turning it off keeps entries but removes that TM from matching for that language.
Language Default
Marks the normal writable destination for new or confirmed bilingual segments in that target language. A protected read-only TM cannot be selected.
Priority
The order used when several active TMs have relevant matches. Drag within the language tab; the saved order is visible immediately.

Add the right kind of memory

Add a Translation Memory

  1. Choose Add TM. Use New for an empty writable TM, From Project for an independent copy of a compatible TM, or System for an available read-only copy.
  2. For New, enter a recognizable name. For From Project or System, compare the source language, available target languages, entry count, and project or source label before selecting a resource.
  3. Choose Create or Import and wait until the dialog closes. Open each intended target-language tab and set Active, Language Default, and priority as needed.

After completion: The TM appears under All and every attached target-language tab. From Project is a copy and does not follow later edits in the original project; System remains read-only.

Inspect, edit, import, and export entries

Select a memory name to open its detail workspace. Use the language tabs and filters to inspect entries, open an editable row to revise it, or select rows for deletion. Import accepts TMX for writable memories; Export downloads TMX for use in compatible tools.

Use matches with judgment

A memory match is ranked against the current source and may be combined with other authorized project context. The current source, protected tags, terminology, and task instructions remain authoritative. Earlier wording can be unsuitable when meaning, speaker, file context, or target-language requirements differ.

Problem

A TM does not appear in a language tab

What to do

Open All and check the TM's attached target languages. If the language is absent and the resource is writable, add that project target language; otherwise import a compatible TM.

Problem

Expected matches are missing in the Editor

What to do

Check the current target-language tab: the TM must be attached and Active. If it was just imported, wait for its visible preparation status to finish, refresh, and verify the entry itself has target text for that language.

Problem

Import or editing controls are disabled

What to do

Check whether the detail marks the TM as System or read-only. Those resources can be searched and exported but not changed; create a New TM or import a project copy when you need an editable resource.
